  • Day 15. Name three (or more) things you love about fall. Anything you don’t like about it?

Oh Fall, how I love you so damn much. You are my favorite season of the year. You get rid of my depression and it’s like a new self awakens in me. There’s nothing that beats the crispness that you bring in the air. You paint the world in such beautiful colors for a few months. You have my favorite holiday of the year (Halloween) in you and my favorite reading challenge of the year (RIP). There’s nothing that beats reading spooky stories while you shower us with leaves and send a pleasant chill into the air. You make me think of spices like cinnamon and cloves and orange rinds and make me crave things like apple cider and mulled wine. There is nothing I don’t like about you fall.

  • Halloween 2010

Ah, it was a good one! Nothing essentially Halloween-y about it, but it was an interesting day…let’s see:

    • Woke up at 5:30 this morning and grabbed a pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks
    • Headed to work and slept at my desk UNTIL
    • Jackie Onassis walked into work….well not really. I wish I could say it was a lady in costume, but it wasn’t. I’m not making fun here…I truly felt for this woman, but she really tried my patience. I just had to keep reminding myself that she was mentally ill. But she was MEAN. This woman truly believed that she was Jackie Onassis Kennedy (filled out her paperwork with that name) and then came extremely angry throughout the assessment to the point where I had to call a psychiatric code in the lobby :/
    • Came home from work and checked on my garden which is looking LOVELY :D There’s something I just love about seeing bean plants grow up a pole. It’s beautiful.
    • Took a 3 hour nap
    • Went to Dad’s and ate turkey and rice and spinach and watched the first half of the Saints game and gave out candy to adorable little trick or treaters :D I want little kiddies so bad!!!!!!
    • During half time we went to Starbucks and got another pumpkin spice latte and gave candy to the drive thru workers :)
    • The Saints freaking beat the Steelers during an amazing second half!! What a game!!!!!!!!
    • Another fun fact about the Saints game…We attempted to break the world record for most costumed people in one place tonight at the Superdome…don’t know if we did or not…I’m assuming we did!
    • Posted for the Classic Reads Book Club and updated my 50x50
    • And the plans for the rest of the night are to do a bit of spooky reading and to finish watching The Innocents with Deborah Kerr which I am LOVING!!! What a freaking awesome movie!!!!

Happy Halloween Everyone :D :D Hugs to all!!! I know…not very spooky, but I’m in a loveable mood right now :p

  • Halloween Mix 2010

Every year I make a Halloween Mix CD for myself. It’s not what people would stereotypically consider “spooky music”. Instead, it’s comprised of what I call “October songs”. Songs that feel like October does to me. Which could be something totally different for others. Someone else might listen to the same CD and say What the hell does this have to do with Halloween or October…but this is what October sounds like to me.

I wanted to send copies of my 2010 mix to some friends this year, but I failed at making it in time this year :/ So I put it up on rapidshare as a zip file for your download pleasure. Here’s the link: Halloween2010mix. Let me know if it doesn’t work….I’ll try to find some way to fix it! And here’s the play list:

    1. On the Nature of Daylight - Max Richter

    2. Rosylyn - Bon Iver & St. Vincent

    3. Revenge (ft. The Flaming Lips - Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse

    4. The Water - Feist

    5. Mercy Street - Fever Ray

    6. About Today - The National

    7. Sunrise - Yeasayer

    8. Lately (Deuxieme) - Memoryhouse

    9. You and I - Washed Out feat. Caroline Polachek

    10. Night time - The XX

    11. Rewrite - Sia

    12. Gay Sons of Lesbian Mothers - Kaki King

    13. Vibraphone Song - Jonsi

    14. Cello Song - Nick Drake

    15. Here, In My Head - Tori Amos

    16. Young God - Tiny Vipers

    17. Walking Man - Zoe Keating

  • 50x50 Update: Create 50 Things That I’m Proud Of #2

So this one’s kind of stupid, but I’m still proud of it :p My little brother, my sister, my mom and myself carved pumpkins tonight. It’s sort of become a tradition for us to not do the traditional pumpkins, but to go out and buy the stenciling kits and to do those instead. So that’s what we did again this year. These little bastards can be hard though! I got a different kind of pumpkin than everyone else this year though…mine’s smooth and is orange but has a sort of bluish hue to it as well. Really pretty! The tricky thing about carving these is if you screw up the tiniest part you can ruin your design…like last year when I cut my poor cat’s ear off (on the pumpkin, not a real cat :p) Anyway, here’s the bat that I did this year:

And here’s all of our pumpkins! From left to right, my mom just did a traditional Jack-O-Lantern, my bat, my sister did some thing peeking through a window and my little brother did a haunted castle! They came out pretty cool!

  • 50x50 Update - Goals 31 &42 #1

I knocked two goal updates out with one stone tonight. Goal 31 is to watch 50 Black and White Movies and Goal 42 is to see 50 films that are instant favorites. Believe it or not, horror movie fan that I am, I had never seen the original “The Haunting” based on Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House. Well I’ve seen it now and what an absolutely AMAZING film it is!! For the month of October I have a whole set of horror movies queued up on netflix and this one just happened to come while I’m also reading Shirley Jackson’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle and the feeling of the two are so similar.

The amazing thing about this film and the story is that no ghosts are ever shown. Unlike the horrible remake that came out about ten years or so ago. Instead it relies on the horror in your mind. The suspense that you create on what could be…on what lies behind the horrible sounds, the child’s cries, the knocking on the door, the writing on the walls.

The acting in the movie was top notch, as was the score, the sets, everything. When did we lose that caliber of cinema that was present in black and white film? That’s the reason that I set this goal for myself. There’s just something about this era of movies that is so damn special. It was about the STORY, the actors, their relationships. Now so much seems to depend upon the special effects, the budget of the film, box office numbers. I’m not saying I don’t enjoy certain movies nowadays…I CERTAINLY do!! Most of my favorite films are modern movies…but even those are quiet movies like Lost in Translation…

Anyway, if you’ve yet to see this one, or even if you have…squeeze it in before Halloween! Perfect atmospheric movie and a great start to this goal :)
